EVEN LATER THURSDAY

‘Hey, Zombie!’

‘Yeah?’

‘Do you want to come practice scaring with us after school?’ Creepy asked.

‘We’re thinking of building a MOBSTACLE COURSE in my yard,’ Skelee added.

Skelee’s yard would make an epic obstacle course!

‘We’ve gotta get fit for Scare Fest!’ Slimey agreed.

It sounded like a great idea and I really, really wanted to go, but then I remembered how much work I still had to do.

‘I can’t,’ I said gloomily. ‘I have to work on this DUMB PLAY.’

‘Dude, it’s taking up all your time!’ Skelee complained. But I knew he wasn’t mad at me. He just felt sorry for me. ‘At a really important time in your life too.’

‘Maybe if you get into it and write it really fast, you’ll be able to join us later on,’ Slimey suggested. ‘It shouldn’t take the WHOLE night, right?’

‘Right!’

‘What you need is a PLAN,’ Creepy said. ‘Just like the strategies and tactics we have for scaring. You know what your goal is, so what actions will help you reach that goal?’

My friends’ advice made me feel hopeful. The script shouldn’t take super long to write if I was really focused about it. What strategies might help me write it faster? Hmm… Somewhere to concentrate where no one will disturb me… A COMFY SPOT to sit in while I write… Information and inspiration…

‘The cinema!’

‘Uh, no, Zombie.’

‘My bed?’

‘No…’

‘My lounge room!’

My friends all shook their heads and I had to really strain my PEA-SIZED BRAIN. It kinda hurt.

‘What about… the school library?’ Skelee suggested.

‘The school what now?’

Actually, he was totally right! After they all left to go build their mobstacle course without me, I went into the school library and discovered it had everything I needed. Pencils. Desks and comfy chairs. And absolute silence, since nobody was hanging out there after school, not even the librarian.

‘See ya!’ she said, leaving me to fend for myself. ‘Enjoy your research!’

Research, yes. That’s what I needed to do. That was my plan of attack. I just had to, you know… research. RE. SEARCH.

Search…

I guess it starts with searching? Or maybe ends with searching, since search is on the end of the word.

I groaned. I was already STUCK and I’d just got here! I tipped out my bag and opened up the notebook where I was meant to be writing the script for Valerie’s play. It was still empty.

Okay, think, Zombie!

I’d done research before. I’d done research just yesterday, in fact, when I went and scoped out the Forest Biome and checked out the terrain.

I looked around the library. Shelves, books… TRICKY TERRAIN.

‘I didn’t just look at the terrain,’ I muttered to myself, sharpening my pencil with my teeth. ‘I also looked for clues and details I could use to my advantage. I investigated the terrain.’

So, I looked a little closer at the library shelves, and that’s when an amazing idea hit me—libraries are full of books!

Books are full of stories.

I needed a story.

‘Zombie, you’re a GENIUS!’ I cheered. I ran to the nearest shelf and pulled out a book.
